Students are advised to prepare long-range plans according to curricular guidelines for the degree program selected. Attention to such details as semester credit loads and course sequences are recommended for optimum experiences.
The academic advising program at NDSU is designed to facilitate the student's intellectual and personal growth, to assist students in using university resources, and to guide students in making informed choices regarding academic and career plans. Following admission to NDSU, each student is assigned an adviser from the college or department in which the student is majoring. If a major has not been declared, an assignment is made with an adviser in the Career and Advising Center. An adviser assists a student in selecting courses to ensure a well-balanced education and helps interpret university and college policies and requirements. However, students are fully responsible for their academic decisions including selecting courses, meeting course requisites, corequisites/prerequisites, and adhering to policies, procedures, and deadlines. The Office of Registration and Records serves as a support center for academic advising on campus. Each of the colleges on campus has a designated staff member in Registration and Records who serves as a Degree and Records Analyst to support academic advising.
Academic Requirements Report
The Academic Requirements Report (Automated Degree Audit) is a tool available to students and advisers to track degree progress. In essence, this tool replaces the paper curriculum guide and allows the student and adviser to see degree progress at any time during the student’s academic career. It is interactive and also allows the student to plan for and register for upcoming semesters within the report. Academic Advisers vs. Degree & Records Analysts
- ACADEMIC ADVISERS assist students in using university resources and guide students in making informed choices regarding academic and career plans. The adviser assists students in selecting courses to ensure a well-balanced education and helps students interpret university and college policies and requirements.
- Degree and Records Analysts are representatives from the Office of Registration and Records responsible for tracking degree progress and clearing students for graduation with respect to NDSU graduation requirements. The analyst also offers students and advisers guidance with academic issues and the interpretation of academic policies.
